Child Find

The Exceptional Student Services Department (ESS) of the Flagstaff Unified School District (FUSD) provides a full range of services for students who have learning needs that lie outside the usual range of instructional differentiation provided in general education classrooms and meet eligibility criteria for one of the recognized categories of educational disability.

Do you have concerns about your child’s functioning in any of these areas?

  • Vision (ability to see and interpret visual information)
  • Hearing (ability to detect and process sounds)
  • Cognitive or Academic Skills (thinking, learning, and problem-solving abilities)
  • Communication (expressing and understanding ideas through language or gestures)
  • Motor Skills (coordinated use of muscles for movement and control)
  • Social-Emotional or Behavioral Skills (interactions and behavior in social settings)
  • Adaptive Development (everyday self-care and independence skills)

FUSD can provide screenings in each of these areas upon the request of a parent or teacher for any child, ages 3 to 21, who resides within the district boundaries, including students from migrant or homeless families, wards of the state, and private- and home-schooled students.  A parent may request screening in the following ways:

  • For school-age children, ages 5-21, who currently attend an FUSD school, contact the child’s school administrator.
  • For preschool-age children, ages 3-5, and whose 5th birthday is after August 31 and are not eligible for kindergarten, contact the FUSD Preschool Evaluation Team at 928.773.4148 or bmartich@fusd1.org
  • For children younger than 3 years, services are available through the Arizona Early Intervention Program (AzEIP) at 928.779.1679 (Northland Rural Therapy Associates).

Parents also have the right to request a special education evaluation from the district when an educational disability and the need for specialized instruction is suspected.  A written request is recommended, and the parent should use the contact information above, depending on the age of the child.
