Fourth Grade
Welcome to Fourth Grade Academics!

Reading and Writing
Your child will learn to:
- Read 4th grade materials accurately, fluently and with appropriate pacing
- Determine meanings, pronunciation, antonyms (opposite) of words by using a dictionary, thesaurus, glossary, etc.
- Exhibit comprehension by drawing conclusions, determining cause and effect, making inferences
- Identify types of literature- poetry, novel, short story, biography, drama
- Locate specific information in letters, directories, menus, schedules, forms, internet search engines, manuals, etc.
- Extend and improve use of the writing process (prewriting, drafting, revising, editing, and publishing)
- Learn and use the effective writing traits
- focus ideas that hold the reader’s attention
- clear organization
- a “voice” or tone that matches the style of the writing
- carefully selected words
- use of both simple and complex sentences that flow naturally
- correct capitalization, spelling, punctuation, grammar and paragraphing
- Accurately paraphrase information from research materials
Mathematics and Science
Your child will learn to:
- Identify place values (i.e. 203,495= 200,000 + 3,000 + 400 + 90 + 5)
- Compare two unit fractions (1/2 to 1/5) to like denominators
- Use, compare and order decimals
- Multiply multi-digit numbers by two digit numbers; divide with one-digit
- Memorize multiplication and division facts through 12s
- Compute elapsed time using a clock or calendar
- Solve problems using estimated and actual measurement, graphs, and charts
- Use estimation to verify if a calculation is reasonable (can 3284 x 343 = 1200?)
- Solve algebraic equations with one missing variable (12 = n x 4)
- Draw and classify points, lines, angles
- Formulate questions and predictions for investigation/experimentation
- Analyze data to identify trends
- Classify vertebrates (mammals, birds, fish reptiles, amphibians; and invertebrates (insects, arachnids)
- Describe ways to conserve resources
- Investigate properties of electricity, magnetism and water
- Understand processes acting on the earth (erosion, floods, fires, earthquakes, wind, weather, etc.)
Social Studies
Fourth grade covers Arizona and southwest history. Early civilizations in Central and South America, and their encounters with Europeans, are also explored.
Technology, Art, Music and PE
Your child will learn to:
- Understand the value of art and music throughout history
- Identify the meaning or ideas communicated through art and music
- Learn vocabulary and skills needed to create and perform
- Develop motor skills
- Establish habits for a healthy and active lifestyle
- Foster positive communication and interaction with peers
- Use technology safely and effectively for research, learning, communication and exploration
